The Highway Department, comprised of a nine-member crew, is responsible for maintaining the dirt and paved roads in Chester. This entails the plowing of those roads in the winter, grading the dirt roads and dealing with the inevitable mud season in the spring, and repairing the paved roads as well. In addition, the sidewalks are also plowed in the winter by the Highway Department and are swept to remove all the winter salt and sand by local high school students which provides them with a work experience during spring break.
The Department is also responsible for culvert installations, cleaning of roadside ditches and mowing, maintaining the 73 bridges on Town roads, removal of fallen trees on Town roads, installation of road signs, and assisting other Departments when necessary. The Public Works Director approves all applications for a Highway Access Permit. Applications can be downloaded from the Forms section on this website or at the Town Office. |
